Buhari Rejects Devaluation, Says ‘I Won't Kill The Naira’

President Muhammadu Buhari declared late Wednesday in Nairobi that he was yet to be convinced that Nigeria and its people will derive any tangible benefit from an official devaluation of the Naira. Speaking at an interactive meeting with Nigerians living in Kenya, President Buhari maintained that while export-driven economies could benefit from devaluation of their currencies, devaluation would only result in further inflation and hardship for the poor and middle classes in Nigeria's import-dependent economy. The President added that he had no intention of bringing further hardship on the country's poor who, he said, have suffered enough already. Likening devaluing the Naira to having it "killed", President Buhari said that proponents of devaluation will have to work much harder to convince him that ordinary Nigerians will gain anything from it. The President also rejected suggestions that the Central Bank of Nigeria should resume the sale of foreign exchange to Bureaux de Change (BDCs), saying that the Bureau de Change business had become a scam and a drain on the economy. "We had just 74 of the bureaux in 2005, now they have grown to about 2, 800," President Buhari noted. He alleged that some bank and government officials used surrogates to run the BDCs and prosper at public expense by obtaining foreign exchange from government at official rates and selling it at much higher rates. "We will use our foreign exchange for industry, spare parts and the development of needed infrastructure. "We don't have the Dollars to give to the BDCs. Let them go and get it from wherever they can, other than the Central Bank," President Buhari told the gathering. The President reaffirmed his conviction that about a third of petroleum subsidy payments under the previous administration was bogus. "They just stamped papers and collected our foreign exchange," he said. The President appealed to Nigerians studying abroad to bear with his administration as it strives to address the challenges they are facing as a result of new foreign exchange measures. He said that he was optimistic that the Nigerian economy would stabilize soon with the efficient implementation of measures and policies that have been introduced by his administration.

President Buhari Reaffirms Commitment To Clean-Up Of Ogoniland

President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his administration's steadfast commitment to the implementation of UNEP recommendations for the clean-up of Ogoniland and other parts of the Niger Delta which have been damaged by crude oil spillage. Speaking on Thursday in Nairobi, during a visit to the United Nations office in the Kenyan capital, President Buhari urged the United Nations to give more support for his administration's efforts to clean up the region. "When I came into office on May 29, 2015, one of the first tasks I carried out was to authorise the implementation of the recommendations of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for the clean-up of Ogoniland. "The devastation caused by oil spillage has destroyed many lives and livelihoods and is clearly one of the reasons why many people in that region lost faith in government and resorted to the many criminal activities we are seeing in the region today. "The action our government took to implement UNEP's recommendations has given the indigenes of the region hope that there are better days ahead. "Let me, therefore, express appreciation on behalf of the government of Nigeria to UNEP and other development partners for their cooperation and support on this very delicate matter and also request for their continued support as we implement the recommendations and transform the fortunes of the region," President Buhari said. The President applauded the outcome of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that held in Paris in December 2015. "The commitments agreed in Paris will clearly benefit Nigeria and many African nations adversely impacted by climate change. We therefore look forward to their fulfillment and implementation. "As the UN Office in Nairobi gears up to host the 2nd session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) this year under the auspices of UNEP, I would like to take this opportunity to further pledge Nigeria’s commitment to this very worthy cause of having a safe, secure and clean planet," he said. Sustainable Urbanisation In Africa President Buhari also said that with half of the world’s population now living in cities, world leaders must give greater attention to the challenges of rapid urbanisation. "In our effort to promote the sustainable urbanisation in Africa, the Federal Government of Nigeria funded and anchored the Africa Urban Agenda (AUA) programme in partnership with the UN-Habitat. "The Programme aims to enhance engagements between state and non-state actors to build consensus around identified urban development priorities and amplify Africa’s voice at the global level towards HABITAT III. "The Africa Urban Agenda will culminate in a major conference of African Ministers of Housing where numerous issues will be discussed. "I am pleased to announce that this conference will be hosted by Nigeria in Abuja next month and I look forward to meeting and deliberating with you, and other stakeholders on this very important topic," the President said. The Resident Coordinator of United Nations Office, Miss Sahle-Work Zewde, said that the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in a free and fair election last year demonstrated the commitment of Nigerians to democracy as a system of government. She described Nigeria as a "crucial member of the UN, a vital partner and a major contributor to UN peace-keeping operations." Before leaving the United Nations office, President Buhari undertook the symbolic planting of a tree, a tradition reserved for all visiting Heads of State and Government. He also addressed the ongoing session of the "Mini-United Nations," an annual event that brings children from all of the world's regions together to draft, debate and pass resolutions on issues of current global interest.

Economic Council Meeting: FG Says No Plan To Increase Taxes

The federal government says it has no plans to increase company taxes or Value Added Tax in the country despite the dwindling oil revenue. It, however, said that it would do all it can to ensure that Nigerians pay their taxes as and when due. The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, said this while giving an update on the 2016 budget before the National Assembly. This, according to him, was the outcome of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He said that the budget is geared towards stimulating the economy and promoting inclusive growth and that the federal government would build an economy that is less vulnerable to oil price shocks by creating resistant divested income base and creating efficient public financial management system. He said that government would partner states and local governments to recruit, train and deploy 500,000 unemployed graduates as teachers. He added that the Vice President’s office was also working to design an implementable and transparent conditional cash transfer programme of 5,000 Naira monthly to one million poorest and most vulnerable.. During its briefing, the Economic Council said that the balance of the excess crude account as at December 31, 2015 stood at $2.257 billion. Council said that it has also resolved the situation where revenue agencies collect monies in foreign currency but remit such accounts in Naira into the federation account. The Governor of Anambra State, Willy Obiano made this known during the briefing. The Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, also spoke on the management of excess crude account and the need to carry out a forensic audit of revenue agencies for which KPMG has been appointed.

Olisa Metuh Released on Bail

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Olisa Metuh has been released on bail. Mr Metuh walked out of Kuje Prisons on Thursday afternoon after meeting the bail conditions given to him by the court. A Federal High Court had on Wednesday, varied the bail conditions given to Mr Olisa Metuh. Justice Okon Abang, signed his release warrant, upon being satisfied with the verification of the details of the two sureties provided by the accused and the title documents of the property owned by the sureties. The verification exercise was done by the Chief Registrar of the court with the involvement of the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, whom the judge directed must verify the residential addresses of the two sureties. A court official confirmed to our correspondent that Metuh met the bail conditions and presented the necessary documents just before the close of work on Thursday. Trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, changed his earlier order that the sureties must be property owners in the Maitama area of Abuja only to an order that the two sureties must be owners of properties in any area of the Federal Capital Territory. He, however, retained the sum of bail which he put at 400 million Naira. Justice Abang declined the request of the prosecution, who asked the court to expunge him as part of the verification exercise of the bail conditions on the ground that it is not in his place to make orders for the court. Mr Metuh is accused of receiving the sum of N400 million from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, without a contract, contrary to the Money Laundering Act. Mr Metuh, is also accused of converting the said money to funds for political activities of the Peoples Democratic Party. Mr Metuh was arrested by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at his home on January 5.

Supreme Court Re-affirms Ejike Oguebego's Chairmanship Of Anambra PDP

The Supreme Court in Nigeria has re-affirmed the chairmanship of Ejike Oguebego as the authentic State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State. The Supreme Court also declared the list of candidates submitted by the Ken Emekayi-faction illegal. Mr Oguebego had sued on behalf of themselves and others including Mr Chris Uba, who is the Anambra South Senatorial Zone candidate for the apex court to determine who were the legal and validly nominated candidates of the party to stand for the last general elections for the party in the state. Going by the ruling, the list of nominated party candidates in the last election from the Oguebego-led executive of the Anambra PDP is the only one to be recognised by the INEC. In the list are Chris Uba, John Emeka and Annie Okonkwo said to be the duly nominated senatorial candidates for Anambra South, Central and North in the March 28, 2015 general election. Declaring the judgement, the Court also confirmed that copies of the judgement were ready for collection.

Zika Virus: Nigeria Issues Travel Restrictions To Latin America

The Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria has issued a travel restriction to Latin America, especially by pregnant women until the Zika Virus outbreak situation improves. In a statement by the Ministry on Friday, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, assured Nigerians that there was no case of the Zika Virus in the country. The Minister, however, directed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to include Zika Virus diagnosis as part of the ongoing efforts to manage Lassa fever outbreak. The World Health Organization has raised a global alert because the disease has spread in Brazil and 22 countries in the Americas. The Zika Virus disease is transmitted through the bite of a particular mosquito known as Aedes Aegypti with symptoms such as mild fever, rash, joint pain and red eye. If the virus gets into a pregnant woman, it can cause birth defects in the unborn baby. At the moment, there is no cure or vaccine for the virus. Nigeria is currently trying to contain Lassa Fever that has claimed over 40 lives across the country, with the latest deaths occurring in Lagos and Ebonyi States. The disease is an acute and often fatal viral disease, with fever and usually acquired from infected rats.

Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu Bail

Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has declined to release the detained self-acclaimed leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu? on bail. ?In a ruling on Friday, the court also denied bail to two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial with Kanu. ?Justice Tsoho maintained that the charge against the defendants could attract severe punishment upon conviction. The trial of Nnamdi Kanu and the two other accused persons has been fixed for the 6th to 12th of February. At the hearing on Monday, Mr Kanu, through his counsel, had told the court that the offense for which he was standing trial was a bailable one. However, the Director of Public Prosecution, who represented the Federal Government, asked the court to refuse bail on the grounds that the offence for which Mr Kanu and his co-accused were standing trial was a serious offense. He also told the court that if granted bail, the accused would interfere with witnesses and evidence. In the week before, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ordered that Mr Kanu, who had been on detention, be remanded in prison custody pending the hearing and determination of his bail application. Justice James Tsoho gave the order shortly after Mr Kanu and two others pleaded not guilty to a six-count charge of treasonable felony and illegal importation of a radio transmitter preferred against them by the Federal Government.

FG Will Continue With Existing Power Projects - Fashola

The Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has given the assurance that government will continue with existing power projects inherited from the previous administration. Mr Fashola made the promise after visiting some power projects in Abuja, as part of his nationwide inspection tour of existing projects under his ministry. He said that the ministry would also be embarking on new policies and projects that will improve electricity power supplies. The Minister had visited the 1.2 megawatts solar power plant in Durumi, a suburb of Abuja aimed at lighting up the village. It is one of federal government's electricity power projects for rural communities that is currently not working as officials say the project is not self-sustaining He also visited the transmission sub-station along the airport road which the contractor said would be completed soon. The Minister also noted that tariff remains a major challenge that the government is also willing to address to open up the sector for investors who would want to add value to the sector. He said that if the reviewed tariff regime is allowed to stay, it will encourage more investors. Poor electricity supply is a major problem that successive governments in Nigeria have not been able to address but Mr Fashola insists that the problem is surmountable.

Nigerian Law School Lagos Legal Clinic Goes Dramatic

The Nigerian Law School is working on a new project to educate Nigerians and Africans about Nigerian Law through Drama. The project, which is an initiative of the Lagos branch of the School, has been tagged "Eko Law". It is an offshoot of the legal clinic which the school introduced a few years ago. Thinking out of the box, the leadership at the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School have created a drama series of real legal issues faced by everyday people. The Deputy-Director General and Head of Campus at Council of Legal Education, Nigerian law School, Lagos Campus, Mrs Toun Adebiyi, told Channels Television, “We want to let people know about their rights though dramatization. The initiative is the first of its kind in Africa and it's called Eko Law. “We have the legal stories, we have the students analyse the legal issues in the stories  and we get Nollywood actors to act out the stories just like you have in Suits, The Good Wife or Law & Order.” The Law School curriculum was widened in 2013 to include clinical education. The legal clinics provide pro bono services and also give law students an opportunity to learn first hand some of the issues they will confront in practice. The Lagos campus of the Law School has also partnered with the Lagos Public Interest Law Partnership. With this partnership, some of the students get to serve in top law firms in the state and offer free legal services to solve some of issues they take on at the law clinics.

Inspirational story

GENIUS or MENTALLY ILL?A story is told about a young Thomas Edison who came home one day with a paper for his mother. He told her, “My teacher told me to give this paper only to my mother.” Thomas’ mother read the note and her eyes filled with tears. Thomas asked his mother what the notesaid, and she read aloud, “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself.”And that’s exactly what Thomas’ mother did; she homeschooled her child with devotion and dedication. As the story goes, many years later after Thomas Edison’s mother passed on, and he was now one of the world’s greatest inventors, he found a folded paper among other family items. He opened the very same paper that had been handed to him to give to his mother and read the following message: “Your son is mentally ill. We won’t let him come to school anymore.”At that moment, Edison realized what his mother had done for him so many years ago. He wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century.”In the book of Proverbs we learn: “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Can you imagine what might have happened to Thomas Edison if his mother had read to him the reckless and hurtful words written by his foolish teacher? He might never have inventedthe light bulb or made his many other contributions to society.Thank God for the wise words of his mother! She created the context in which her son could grow to his full potential.Let’s take this message to heart and resolve to use our words for healing today. Just as hurtful words can cause uncontainable damage for life, so can wise words positively affect a person for life. May the words we use today change a life for the better.
