Police uncover fake wine factory in Lagos, arrest owner

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a factory where fake wine and fruit juice are produced in the Oke Odo area of Lagos. A 48-year-old man, Ughanze, the owner of the factory, has been arrested.

Assorted wine, fruit juice and empty bottles were recovered from the uncompleted one-storey building, which doubled as the factory and the owner’s residence. Apart from the finished products, several chemicals and reagents used in manufacturing the products were also recovered by undercover operatives.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who led some journalists to the illegal brewing site, said all samples of products recovered from the factory would be sent to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for laboratory analysis.

He said: “This matter is an interesting case because it has to do with the health of Lagosians. Based on intelligence information that some fake assorted wines and gins were being brewed in an uncompleted building, I detailed my men to go after the perpetrators.

“On December 18, 2018, at about 2pm, the command received credible information that there existed a fake wine brewery in an uncompleted one-storey building in Aboru area of Oke Odo, Lagos, where assorted wine and alcoholic beverages were being produced. Based on the information, I directed the Area Commander, Area P, Alagbado Area Command, to mobilize to the scene, search and seal off the factory.

“When the team arrived the scene, they executed a search warrant, which enabled them to search and recover the following items: 4,000 bottles of already produced, packed and labelled adulterated wine of different brands; 1,000 empty bottles; drums of different sizes; chemicals and reagents used as raw materials, as well as other tools used in the production of fake wine/ beverages.

“During interrogation, the owner of the factory, Ughanze, a native of Obosi in Anambra State, confessed that he was the owner of the building where the illicit drinks were produced.”

Edgal further revealed that the suspect, a secondary school dropout, has neither the requisite qualification nor license to embark on such a business. He noted that the factory serves as both production base and residence for the suspect, his wife and four children.

Sorrow, tears in Lagos

Houses, vehicles, shops and household belongings worth hundreds of millions naira were on Wednesday destroyed in a pipeline explosion in Awori/Abule-Egba, Ojokoro Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

As gathered, the disaster was caused by criminals who had gone to scoop premium motor spirit (PMS) in the area and thereafter left the vandalised pipeline of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) open.

Call it a midnight disaster, you would not be wrong. Most of the goods and property had been destroyed before many of the owners arrived the scene.

Residents said they were awoken by a sudden blast at about 1.30am, which threw them into confusion. While people ran out of their houses, the community was already enmeshed in thick smoke from every direction. While they were scampering for safety, many, Daily Sun learnt, sustained varied injuries.

Victims and residents at the scene

The act of vandalism, which was carried out at a tipper garage behind a branch of a popular bank in Awori, later spread the petrol through a gutter towards Agege. It continued to flow till it was stopped by the canal at Abatoir
Market, having travelled about 10 kilometres.

There was a similar incident in the area on December 26, 2006, which claimed hundreds of lives and property worth millions of naira.

At the garage, where the nefarious act was carried out, there was a block factory and other businesses with artisans working in makeshift shops.

Many of the residents who spoke to the reporter said the perpetrators had for long placed a huge container on the spot where they dug to scoop the fuel. They said though many buyers had indicated interest in the container, no one was ready to give it out even for any amount.

The havoc spread across Shobowale, Arowole, Adepegba, Iyalode Abulegba, and Wamontaofeek streets. Other areas affected were Santosi and Owode roads. Eyewitnesses said the first started around 1.30am.

“Some persons came to inform our people on Tuesday evening that they should get into their houses as early as
possible. They claimed some robbers were planning to rob the community that (Tuesday) night, unknown to us that the vandals only used that as tactics to deceive us.

“I strongly believe that the operation was well-coordinated. The people worked with different syndicates. The security personnel cannot be exempted from this wickedness because they always patrol the area.

“All we are asking for is a thorough investigation so that all the people connected to the crime can face the music. How can the greed of a few people lead to pain for many people who are legitimately going about their
businesses?” a resident, Tokunbo Dada Okunlade, said.

Another angry resident who pleaded anonymity said: “I believe there were people that knew about it.” It was gathered that the criminals dug more than six feet before getting to where they could tamper with the pipe.

“Three months ago, the people also came to scoop fuel on the newly constructed road at Awori Road. There was no disaster and the people went scot-free. The people who carried out the act are highly technical and experienced people,” another resident claimed.

One of the victims, Mr. Ezeoke Basil, who had a shop where he sold cosmetics and drinks wholesale and retail, told Daily Sun that he was finished by the inferno.

Basil, a victim

He said he lost over N25 million worth of goods to the disaster. Most painful to him, he said, was the N2 million worth of goods he added to the shop three days before. He said he did the stocking in preparation for the usual Christmas and New Year rush.

“On Sunday evening, some people told us that robbers were coming to rob our area that night, but when we asked around on Monday, there was nothing like that. Many people were aware of the pipeline vandalism.

“We heard that some people called the police, but the police said it was beyond them.

“I’m left with only N20,000 in my bank account. I’m finished. Where do I start from with my wife and children all depending on this shop?” he lamented.

Shaking and pacing about the burnt out shop, he sobbed like a baby, even as friends and neighbours gathered to console him. He asked the state and federal governments to assist those who lost goods and property to the fire.

Chairman of Taiwo Adewole Residents’ Association in Abule-Egba, Mr. Adekola Olabanjo, said he suspected high-level conspiracy in the crime.

“We gathered that, on Tuesday, the police came to patrol the area. But they refused to alert any emergency service or people in charge of monitoring any damage on pipelines to check if something was amiss. “The people operating the tipper garage, landlords close to the scene and artisans there cannot tell us that they were ignorant of the bunkering. We also discovered that all the tippers in the garage were relocated within these few days.

There was just one left. That couldn’t have happened by coincidence.

“We need a thorough investigation on this because the people were aware. According to my investigation, it was when they couldn’t stop the flow at the spot they were siphoning it that it began to pour into the gutter.

“All through the night, we thought our end had come because the fire was massive. The people have kept quiet for long and this is the consequence.”

The high-tension cable passing through the area was also burnt by the inferno, throwing the people into darkness. A shopping mall, Just Rite, miraculously escaped unhurt. It was discovered that the flowing fuel and fire passed under the gutter in the premises. Because of the thickness of the slabs covering the gutter, the fire couldn’t escape let alone escalate to the building.

Homes razed in the inferno

A man operating a car shop in front of Samar Petrol Filling Station, which was beside the Just Rite Shopping Mall inwards Agege, lost 16 vehicles. They were all razed.

According to residents who spoke to the reporter, the owner of the business fainted as soon as he rushed to the scene and discovered that all his years of investment were gone in minutes. Interestingly, a dog was also consumed by the raging fire. Close to a mechanic workshop, a resident, Mrs. Caroline, said the dog rushed out in the middle of the night, perhaps to save some of the items that were being destroyed, but it was burnt beyond recognition.

The general manager of the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, who was at the scene, said the agency, in collaboration with other stakeholders, responded to the fire outbreak, which occurred at about 2am.

He noted that no fatality was recorded and that the few people injured were immediately attended to by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and LASEMA’s paramedics.

Tiamiyu further said: “The incident occurred at about 2am, Wednesday, December 19. On arrival at the incident scene, the spillage from the bunkering activities came in contact with an ignitable source; the impact resulted in an inferno as it ravaged several houses and cars.

“Prompt intervention by the Lagos Fire Service men and LRU firemen, who immediately deployed fire trucks and personnel to combat the inferno, curtailed further spread to adjoining buildings and also the nearest filling station in the area.

“The loss and damaged inventory of the inferno, which ravaged nine streets is as follows: 38 vehicles were destroyed, four tricycles were destroyed, 71 shops destroyed, 30 rooms destroyed, two blocks of flats destroyed, one church auditorium destroyed.

Homes and shops razed in the inferno

Several other properties were salvaged around the axis, including the Just Rite Mall, petrol stations and other facilities around Abule-Egba Bus Stop and Awori U-turn.”

The LASEMA boss noted that investigation was still in process on the cause of the inferno as well as those that might have been responsible for the incident.

He assured residents that the situation was under control, noting that people should go about their normal business, urging Lagos residents to always report any suspicious activities through the emergency toll-free line 112/767 to avoid a recurrence.

Among emergency officials on ground were men of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, LASEMA, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Nigerian Red Cross and the Lagos State Fire Service.

Wriggling creature which only sees in black and white and buries its head in the sand is named after Donald Trump

A wriggling amphibian which can only see the world in black and white and which literally buries its head in the sand has been named after President Donald Trump.

Envirobuild, a sustainable housing company, bid £19,800 at an auction for the right to name the worm-like Panamanian amphibian Dermophis donaldtrumpi. The company says that it chose to name the creature after Trump because of Donald Trump’s policies on climate change and how both the amphibian and the president tend to see things in black and white.

The company wrote in a blog post:

Caecilians is taken from the Latin Caecus meaning “blind”, and have rudimentary eyes which can only detect light or dark.

Capable of seeing the world only in black and white, Donald Trump has claimed that climate change is a hoax by the Chinese.

The amphibians live almost entirely underground, believed to have lost their limbs at least 60 million years ago, as an adaptation to burrowing.

Burrowing its head underground helps Donald Trump when avoiding scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change and also appointed several energy lobbyists to the Environment Agency, where their job is to regulate the energy industry.

Envirobuild also drew attention to a similarity between the creature and Donald Trump’s approach to looking after their offspring.

The company said:

The dermophis genus grows an extra layer of skin which their young use their teeth to peel off and eat, a behaviour known as dermatrophy. As a method of ensuring their children survive in life Donald Trump prefers granting them high roles in the Oval Office.

The name will still have to undergo peer review by biologists, the company says – but several other animals are already named after US presidents.

The company added:

As Demorphus donaldtrumpi is an amphibian, it is particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change and is therefore in danger of becoming extinct as a direct result of its namesake’s climate policies.

An alleged rapist approached Lagos State High Court to ask for an out-of-court settlement

An alleged rapist, Nwanne Nwaora, who impregnated his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter, on Monday, approached a Lagos State High Court to ask for an out-of-court settlement.

Nwaora’ counsel, Worer Obuagbaka, prayed that the case, which is in its early stage, should be settled out of court in the interest of the toddler born as a result of the act.
He added that Nwaora had decided to enter into a plea bargain agreement with the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

He said, “If he is sentenced to life imprisonment, the interest of the newborn child will be in jeopardy. If the case is settled out of court and the defendant is asked to take care of the newborn child as well as the defiled victim (complainant), that is enough punishment.

“It will also be in the interest of the newborn child, who will go through trauma, knowing that her father is languishing in jail. I will like to request an adjournment to enable us to interact with the relations of the victim so that the defendant will be made to take care of the newborn child and the defiled child by an order of this court.”

Reacting to Obuagbaka’s plea, the prosecution counsel, Y. G. Oshoala, insisted that Nwaora must lawfully pay for his alleged actions.

He said, “Contrary to the submission of the learned defence counsel, two witnesses, the victim and her mother, are in court and I learnt that they have been to court on seven or more occasions; the victim is presently on school holiday.

“The defendant defiled a 12-year-old child and another child was produced from that act.

“Rather, the defendant should plead guilty and during the allocutus, the defence counsel should bring up the points he is canvassing.

“The defendant cannot have his cake and eat it. He has destroyed the life of another person, who is just starting life. He should take the legal responsibility for his actions. The defendant should plead guilty and face the consequences.

“This is a serious issue and not one that should be taken lightly, because this defendant is unrepentant and has not even shown any remorse.”

Following the submissions of the counsel, the presiding judge, Justice Josephine Oyefeso, adjourned the case till January 7, 2019, for definite trial or report of a plea bargain.

Nwaora was arraigned for allegedly defiling the minor on November 10, 2015, at No. 55 Aromire Street, Muri Busari, Ogba, Lagos.

The 40-year-old Nwaora was alleged to have forcefully had sexual intercourse with the 12-year-old.

According to the victim, the defendant came into her mother’s house, hit her face with his fist and had carnal knowledge of her.

She said, “I was in our house with my younger brother when Uncle Nwaora, who is our neighbour, came in and sent my brother on an errand. He told my brother to go to the next street and check if his wife was back from work.

“Immediately, my brother left, he grabbed me, hit my face with his fist, because I was struggling with him. He then tore my pants and then forcefully made love to me. I bled and thereafter washed off my pants that were stained with blood. I couldn’t tell my mother, because he threatened me, and I was afraid she would beat me up.”

shock words from PDP to Buhari on his 76th Brithday

The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to return to his house in Daura and take a deserved rest.

Responding to Buhari’s plea for more time to fix the nation, the PDP said the job of returning the country to the path of glory would not be given to a man who had been asked to always sleep and rest.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, told one of our correspondents that the President should return to his house in Daura, Katsina State, where he said he (President Buhari) should take a deserved rest.

He said, “We don’t have time to waste anymore. The country cannot afford a sleeping President. President Buhari has done what he could do, but unfortunately, his best is not good enough for the country.

“He told Nigerians about four years ago that old age would slow him down. I’m not sure he is getting younger since he said that. The same President also said that his doctors had asked him to rest, eat and sleep more. As much as he needs all these, we need to tell him that the country cannot afford such a leader at this critical time when all hands must be on deck.

“We have a high number of unemployed youths, citizens and soldiers are being killed by terrorists, the roads are bad, the economy is bad and the President who had been asked to be sleeping is asking for more time. Ask him, more time to do what?” Ologbondiyan said that as a father, the President needs to go home and rest.

Ologbondiyan had earlier in a statement on Monday said the current state of Nigeria had become horrendous for the average Nigerian, adding that rather than continuing as President in 2019, Buhari should go back to his hometown, Daura.

Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Buhari’s 76 birthday celebration, said Buhari had attained a father-figure position and should do everything to respect the aspirations and will of the Nigerian people on all issues, particularly the 2019 general elections.

He said, “If President Buhari looks at the state of the nation today, he will discover, and we believe he is aware, that the situation has become horrendous for the average Nigerian.”

The PDP spokeperson urged Buhari to leave a lasting legacy by doing all within his powers to ensure that Nigeria enjoyed peace; ensure that rules were obeyed and that the sensibilities of the people were fully respected.

Ologbondiyan said, “In this regard, the 2019 general elections place a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of President Buhari to guarantee peaceful, credible, free and fair elections, particularly, the presidential election, by ensuring that all electoral laws and rules are obeyed; that opposition members are not molested; that the amendment to the Electoral Act is signed; as well as to declare like his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, did in 2015, that his 2019 re-election ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.”

The opposition party prayed that God grant the President good health and many more years ahead.

PDP’s advice to President infantile, says APC

But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the call on the President to pack and go was not the popular wish of Nigerians who were daily counting their gains under the Buhari government having gone through hell under 16 years misrule of the PDP.

He said the call could only come from those who were not in tune with reality and could not survive without government money.

He said, “They have made the call severally and are repeating it because they have lost ideas of what to use to campaign.

“PDP ran the economy of this country aground. President Buhari has restored the country to the path of economic progress and making it safe to attract foreign investors.

“They and their cohorts should tell Nigerians why they deserve a return and stop making infantile statements.
